Born and raised in southern California Nick’s only dream in life was to one day be on the radio. Since the moment his father brought him into a radio studio and had him cut his first commercial at the age of six he’s been addicted. Gaining his influence from his father RJ Steele, a California Country DJ, he began to learn his way around audio equipment. He left California when he was 10 years old and moved to Las Vegas NV, where he remained for most of his adult life.
After graduating from high school he attended college to major in Criminal Justice, Psychology and Sociology to pursue a career in the FBI. Then one day an entry level position opened at CBS Radio Las Vegas in the Music Research Department. He decided that this was his chance to get into the industry. He now had his foot firmly stuck in
the door of Radio. He then began to branch out and learn everything it took to become a DJ.
He shadowed some of the jocks and learned the basics of what it was like to be on the air. He made a demo and took it to Cat Thomas, the PD of 98.5 KLUC. Cat finally gave him his shot at his dream after a few minor critique sessions and he ran with it. He spent the next few years doing whatever he could to remain in the building. Including working for 2 of 98.5’s sister stations simultaneously, Sportsradio 1140am and Newsradio 840 KXNT. He acquired a full-time position working for the morning show on KXNT during the week and KLUC on the weekends. Mastering his skills in board operation and on air execution. KXNT gave him the opportunity to explore his creativity in Production and Imaging as well.
During the budget cuts, Nick was given the responsibility of handling both AM stations Production Departments. He gained experience in working with AE’s and their clients, also learning that he loved the behind the scenes of radio almost as much as he did being on the air. After about 2 years he realized he was getting less and less time to harness his on-air skills. So he resigned his position on KXNT to give his full focus to being a Radio Personality on KLUC.
Soon he was offered a position as a Midday Host/Production Director/Website Manager in the Tyler/Longview market working for Top 40 Station 95.3 &102.3 The Breeze. After a month he was promoted to the Night position, hosting the appropriately titled “Nick @ Night” show. Getting out in the community as often as he could, he began to get a following. Bringing a new form of entertainment to East Texas with his interactive approach. Weekly going out to high schools to play music and get them pumped up for that nights big football game. Shooting and editing videos for the station website with radio bits that brought in the community via webcam.
After a year, it was time to move on. He was offered afternoons in Dayton OH on the brand new Hot AC station Click 101.5. Intrigued by the possibilities, and the chance to be the first jock on the station, he said goodbye to East Texas and made his way to the mid-west where he now entertains a new kind of audience.
Still as motivated to succeed as he was when he first attained his job in Music Research. Nick is constantly advancing his skills in production as well as imaging and on air execution. He has become a dependable asset to any radio cluster with his positive outlook on life and an ability to get along and work extremely well with those around him.
